Most of the time, one of the most important thing that hinder you from working abroad is the visa. From applying and get the visa, to maintaining it and following the work visa rules made by the government in which you are applying the visa for can be a nightmare itself. In Indonesia, unlike the visa for tourists which is very much easy to get through the visa-free program, the visa system for a foreign worker is notably complicated and always changing. This is due to the intense political pressure for the immigration to control and monitor foreign people who are within Indonesia. If you were foreigners, who have skills that most Indonesians currently don't have, the process of your visa application might be much easier. Moreover, in early 2018, President Jokowi has stated that the government will try to make the process for foreign workers to get expatriate work permit easier as they will simplify the regulation. The policy was issued to encourage the increase of investment and exports. However, you cannot arrive in Indonesia with a hope of finding a job. It is best to secure a job before arriving in Indonesia and let your employer do the work when it comes to securing an expatriate work permit. Your employer will usually act as the sponsor and will sort out all the paperwork or ask some agents to deal with the immigration office on behalf of the applicants. For foreigners who want to reside in Indonesia temporary or permanently, there are some visa options. You may apply for KITAP (Kartu Izin Tinggal Tetap) or Permanent Stay Permit if you were married to an Indonesian national for a minimum of two years, a main shareholder or investor of Indonesian companies, being the top employees of a company, a retiree who wants to stay in Indonesia, and a former Indonesian citizen who wants to regain your old citizenship. The KITAP is valid for five years, and it continues for life if your marriage lasts for more than ten years. You can choose to work as an entrepreneur or work in a company by obtaining a work permit (IMTA). Your Indonesian spouse will remain the sponsor of the KITAP, and the company will become the sponsor for your work permit. The work permit is specific for each job. An expat who loses the job will automatically lose his expatriate work permit. For a semi-resident visa, you may apply for a VITAS (Visa Izin Tinggal Terbatas) and KITAS (limited stay permit card) which is valid for one year. Both visas require a sponsor to assist the visa process and are extendable. You may apply for KITAS through local immigration office in many areas in Indonesia. Before arriving in Indonesia, you need to have VITAS on your passport. Within seven days of your arrival, send a report to the immigration office about your arrival. Once you do so, you will be issued a “foreign expert” KITAS as well as an identification card and a Foreigner’s Control and Supervision book which functions to track changes in your immigration status. Keep all those documents in a safe place and renew your KITAS every year for a maximum of five years. How Can Elson Help You?
